Description

:

Samuel Margolies (1897-1974) was one of America's most famous etchers. He was particularly well known for his use of the aquatint. His mastery of this technique gives his prints a rich tonal range which he uses to great effect in his images. While best known for his woodland and snow scenes (see his Winter Symphony in my inventory), many of his images depict ramshackle villages, or, in this case, docks and a boathouse. He worked in small editions, so his prints are relatively scarce.
Boathouse dates from 1937. It was produced as part of the Federal Artists Program New York City Works Project Administration (WPA). It's a great example of the work done by these artists.
