Biography

Born in 1911 in Warsaw, Poland Josef Herman studied at the Warsaw School of Art for 18 months before dropping out to become a freelance graphic designer. He moved to Brussels following the Nazi invasion of Poland and then to Britain. Whilst in Britain, Josef Herman lived in London, Glasgow and South Wales, setting up a studio in the mining village of Ystradgynlais, where he lived and worked for over a decade.
Herman is best known for his depiction of working life, whether it be miners, farm labourers or women washing, but he also produced still lifes and landscapes.
Herman was awarded an O.B.E in 1981 and in 1990 he was elected to the Royal Academy. Josef Herman died in 2000.
